The mere presence of Asbestos Containing Building Materials (ACBM) in your facilities does not represent an immediate hazard to the occupants. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) regulate ACBM, and Presumed Asbestos Containing Building Materials (PACM). When ACBM and PACM is properly identified in an Asbestos Building Survey, and maintained in good condition under protocols established in your facility-specific Asbestos Management Plan (AMP) or Operations and Maintenance (O&M) Program, risk for occupant exposure is minimized.
Unless the materials are damaged, or significantly damaged, or the facility will undergo renovation or demolition that will disturb the asbestos, it is recommended that the ACBM be managed in place under a program of periodic surveillance to monitor any change in condition. Asbestos containing materials (ACM) are only hazardous when they are disturbed or the materials become damaged.
