MoldMolds are viable (living) microscopic organisms. Thousands of these agents are found in nature. Most are harmless to humans and, in many instances, beneficial. A few, however, can cause serious infections and some can cause allergic reactions in sensitive individuals. Allergic responses to molds are generally more common. Individuals with mold allergies or sensitivities may experience nasal congestion, respiratory distress, skin inflammation, scratchy throat, runny nose, watery eyes, etc. when exposed to some molds. Molds are most often introduced into the indoor environment by the building occupants themselves or by the outside make-up air. Building materials, such as wood, cellulose, paints, adhesives, etc., have enough nutrients to support growth, however, growth will not occur without water. Untreated moisture problems inside a building (such as standing water in HVAC condensate pans, water leaks, condensation, high humidity, etc.) usually provide more than enough water to support growth. The growth may occur on fabrics, carpet, carpet pads, dry wall, paint, caulk, ceiling tiles, wall paper, insulation, etc.
